The WIFE 2017
by
Bjorn Runge
A novelist has bagged the Nobel. He flies with his beloved
wife and son to Sweden to attend the award ceremony.A hopful biographer tails
the family in the hope of winning their favour.
Things start to go wrong when the novelists’ career reaches
its peak.In his award-winning speech,he effusively thanks his wife who doesn’t take
this praise kindly. It is gradually revealed that the husband is a benefactor of
the wife’s labours who has acted as a ghost writer for him all these years. In
a way,its her Nobel.They both feel choked.
Its the biographer ,Christian Slater, who puts ideas in the
wife’s head and then instigates the son against the author, played by Jonathan
Pryce. The son harbours resentment against his father as he feels he judges his
writing rather too harshly.Slater sows the seeds of suspicion in the son’s mind
as well.
Confronted by the son and the wife, the Nobel laureate’s
health suffers ,he collapses and passes away. The film ends on a very poignant note.
Glenn Close takes her time in lifting the veil off the
mystery. Her performance is Oscar class and it wud be a surprise if she doesn’t go
on to win the Best Actress. The film is quite engaging as well, but the plot is a
bit incredulous. Why wud a woman bear exploitation for so long ? Like she must
have had the option of walking out on her husband after writing three-four
novels. Can such a shallow man actually go onto win the Nobel itself. The plot does
seem like a stretch, but the film is watchable for its acting performances.
