Ek din pratidin 1979

A single working girl doesn’t reach home after work. Her
parents and siblings keep waiting till late in the night, but then panic sets
in.The girl /woman is the only working member in a family of 7,and it is her salary along with her father’s
pension that keeps the family afloat.
Her brother and his friend rush off to police station and a
morgue to look for her whereabouts. The father and a neighbour visit a hospital
to check upon injured women. But the daughter is nowhere to be found. The family
members have a sense of foreboding ,even
as they hope that nothing untoward has happened to her.
Late into the night ,when the family realises that they are
helpless, tension between them grows and the college going sister asks the
members if they think they are too selfish and hardly ever think of the Elder
Sister and her needs.
Finally, the working arrives in the morning. No one asks where
she was. She doesn’t proffer an answer either. It is her business, and though neigbours might be interested ,the
director doesn’t bother abut any explanations.
There is a very
strong message here. If people are dependent upon you,or if you are self
sufficient economically ,then people cant foist their wishes upon you.Gainful
employment genuinely empowers a person.
Parennts fretting about the whereabouts of a working girl is
nothing new.Even today ,parents in India remain anxious till their daughter reaches
back home. This is because of unsafe environment for females in out country.Even
in India ,situation is not bad in Kolkata and Gujarat. But Delhi-NCR sucks in
this regard.
This is a very social film.Mrinal Da has raised an issue
whch remains relevant even forty years after the film got released.
