sonu ke titu ki sweety 2018
by
luv ranjan
There is a very strong
gayish subtext in this film ,which the
filmmakers have tried to pass off as brotherly bonding between childhood
friends.I know how strongly buddies feel for each other. There is also a general
code of looking out for ur buddy, and having his back. Its not quite right to say that in every contest
between a male friend and a girl, the latter always wins. She might score a
momentary victory, but in the long term,a real friend always survives, and prevails. And yet,the manner in which Sonu goes
about sabotaging Titu’s not one,but two serious relationships smacks of
possessiveness.Weirder still is his last throw of dice,in which he ends up
asking Titu to choose between him or the girl.He stoops to this last level
twice,such is his desperation.
Titu has been conceived of
in the story as a dumb, credulous
bitch. He is a sitting duck for any manipulative brain.Sonu (must) have ran this
fool as he wanted all their lives. Now
when physical needs have taken over and Titu is desperate to be with girls (as
well),Sonu must thwart his plans.Titu is the prize here.He is the scion of a
halwai family, the grandson of Ghasita (Aloke Nath) .He has some value as a
boyfriend and a potential husband.Sonu outsmarts a girlfriend of Titu, but meets
his match in Sweety, who seems to be a resilient opponent. What follows is some
pretty juvenile turn of events ,till the final resolution.
This film might come across
as quite misogynistic. For that matter ,Luv Ranjan’s Punchanama 1-2 were
labelled so as well.Infact I suppose most buddy films are so branded, because
too much of male bonding often does result in the bashing of the other sex.Luv
ranjan,as all of us,had the option of
becoming a feminist champion,or a storyteller. He chose to be true to his
art.Boys do rail against women ,after all,as I am sure, girls do too. A
storyteller cannot afford to be politically correct. He must stay true to
situations and characters.
Nusrat bharucha as Sweety
has done a very convincing job of a scheming gold-digger.She is the star of the
show.KArthik Aryan is a sincere dude, but an ordinary actor.Sunny singh ,who
plays Titu is a perfect casting. He does look like a gullible gawk. His sexuality also seems to be
uncertain,unresolved and unexplored.Of
course,he has wooden expressions, and his mouth is usually agape, but somehow he
comes across as someone who is worth fighting a world war over.ALOKENATH has
played a bad boy in the film.Right from his beard ,to his red sherwani ,and his
body language as well as propensity to utter the chew word,he has done a very
corny job.If one goes on a mental holiday, and doesn’t mind a bit of gender
stereotyping, this is a rather entertaining film. The makers wud not mind if we
dub this a ‘tolerable chewtyapa’.The most relevant line in the film is
Aloknath’s-
‘’mera life ka usool hai ki
kisi chew admi ko ye mat batao ki wo chew hai.’’
And why not ?
How else wud enjoy his
performance then? Let the show go on.Let chewtyapa play itself out.Life must go
on.
