ERIN BROKOVICH 2000
by
Steven Soderbergh
Pacific Gas and Electric Company had contaminated Hinkley, California's water table by releasing millions of gallons of water contaminated by carcinogenic hexavalent chromium into unlined ponds. Julia Roberts, playing the eponymous role, was a workless mother of three, who forced a lawyer, played by Albert Finney, to hire her. Somehow, this woman, sans experience and devoid of any legal training, collected information and rallied the locals to file a combined lawsuit against the corporation. USD 333 were finally paid to the victims. Erin received USD 2 million.
Julia Roberts begins very strongly in the first half of the film but turns into her own caricature by the end of it. In the later half, she is obliged to indulge in fusillade to keep up the pretenses. She ended up winning the Best Actress Oscar for her trouble. Aaron Eckhart did well to support her. Albert Finney begins slowly but ends on a bang and proves what a master he is. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Soderbergh also received a nomination. He lost to himself for his directorial effort in Traffic. Erin Brokovich was also nominated for Best Picture but lost to Gladiator.
