Ungli was released after Mr Modi had just ascended the throne. The country had witnessed three years of Anna-Arvind nonsense as well as a strong BJP campaign for the Lok Sabha polls. Spring was in the air; people were fed up with corruption and longed for some or any kind of hope. In that sense, the film does not seem as out of place as it does today. As a film, it had a decent enough but overused vigilante storyline, which is watchable only because of a very heavy cast- Sanjay Dutt, Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda, Neil Bhoopalam, Angad Bedi, Neha Dhupia, Arunoday Singh, Raza Murad and Mahesh Manjrekar. Needless to say, except Dutt and Hashmi, everyone else is wasted. As with every other Hashmi film, even Ungli is 'watchable', and that is a huge achievement.
