There is so much misogyny in the film that it chokes life breath out of you. Since the director makes his intent very clear early in the film, it makes the proceedings bearable. Trying to own a girl after a kiss or a hug and presenting herself as 'your baby' is cringe behaviour but widely pervasive. At least it was when I was a young man. Go hold the hand of a girl in public domain and rascals shall begin murmuring that you two were sleeping together. It must have improved a bit but cannot be much changed. Animal must have brought out this Bhabhi, Bhabhi bullshit back in fashion. In The Girlfriend, Rashmika Mandanna takes back control of her life after her boyfriend, played by Deekshith Shetty, and her father turn her life into living hell. You cannot avoid a bully. You have to take it head-on. This is a nice film. For most of it, Rashmika comes across as a sweet girl-next-door. The film could have been shorter by 20 minutes, but hey, whatever works!
