YEH SAALI ZINDAGI 2011

Irrfan had such a easy presence that he just breezed into a role and walked away with plaudits. With his method, he never looked like he was trying. That meaningful smile, those brooding eyes, the man had a magnetic presence. Here he plays a masterful CA who falls into unrequited love with a singer, played by Chitrangada Singh. She does not use him, he gets used. He allows himself to be used. Without her goodness and his selflessness, there is no story.
Arunoday Singh is in jail with local don played by Yashpal Sharma. Prashant Narayanan plays Yashpal's brother. Aditi Rao Hydari plays Singh's wife. Together, the couple lights many fires in the film. Saurabh Shukla, Sushant Singh and Vipin Sharma also contribute their bit in this Manu Rishi Chadda-written film. The film is about lack of morals and happenstance, how life buggers you when you want bouquet, and rewards you when you fear death.
The film does work as a thriller which mixes timelines. But it does not quite break the roof. YSZ is not a better film than HKA, Is Raat ki... and Chameli. The undoing of the film is that sometimes it gets too soft, comfortable and maudlin.
