The Man from UNCLE- Guy Ritchie's Failed on this one

The Man from UNCLE 2015

What is UNCLE?

United Network Command for Law and Enforcement.

Well, never heard of it.

Guy Ritchie as a director enjoys a cult following. His best-known films, Lock Stock and Two Smokin' Barrels, SNATCH and Rock 'n' Rolla have given his cinema a distinct English ‘pub’ flavor. With those cockney accents, well-trimmed sharp looks, focus on London underground, shady characters and absolutely thrilling OSTs, Jason Statham, Gerard Butler, Brad Pitt and Mark Strong have made strong style statements that fans have just lapped up over the years. Ritchie followed them up with Sherlock films, and despite the misgivings of the hardcore detective fiction fans, managed to carry on the great tradition with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law in fine form. We have come to expect something dark, crisp and swift from Ritchie, and this is where the latest of his offering, The Man from UNCLE falters.

With an unremarkable storyline and a predictable plot, one needs stars to carry a film. Unfortunately, Henry Cavil and Armie Hammer, who play the CIA and KGB spies respectively, fail to pack a punch. Alicia Vikander looks delicious as always and plays her part well, but her shoulders are too fragile to carry the film by herself, especially a spy thriller at that.

The Nazi hunt or thwarting the leftovers’ nefarious designs was another theme that ran parallel with the Cold War spy fiction rush. But it is not nearly as gripping as the spy games played across the Iron Curtain. The film begins with a lot of promise, with some good chase scenes, but gradually plateaus and finally peters out.

From any other director, this could have been said to be a good film. But coming from Guy Ritchie, I daresay this is a waste of time. His, not mine. The man is too talented to waste his time making such ordinary films. And pray why was the film lacking a good OST and was full of situations that smacked of contrived humour.
