MILLER'S CROSSING 1990
by
Joen and Ethan Coen
1990 was the Year of the Mafia. Goodfellas, Godfather III and Miller's Crossing were released in the same year. Which explains why this subtle Coen Brothers film did not quite get the same response despite it being a great film.
Gabriel Byrne plays the right-hand man of an Irish Boss who is also having a dangerous affair with his keep. The rival Italian Boss with a savage streak wants to pop off the brother of the keep played by John Turturro. Byrne had gone to college and possesses the brains to play both sides against each other. He takes more than a few beatings and traverses some tight paths but manages to stay alive and relevant, before bidding goodbye. The story does not have much meat, but the treatment is superb. Cinematography is beautiful as are the performances. IT is a treat to watch gun-firing sequences. They just go bonkers with their weapons. Steve Buscemi appears in a cameo before being knocked off. What a treat!
