MASH is based on a Richard Hooker novel. 

A company of doctors serving in Korea survive the pressures of war by indulging in crazy antics. Donald Sutherland (Hawkeye) and Eliot Gould manage to create a laugh riot. Robert Altman has not hurried the pace of the film one bit. He lets the characters and situations develop at their organic pace. Some scenes like the curtainraiser of bathroom, the live radio broadcast of sex between hot lips and Robert Duvall and the suicide episode are sheer masterclass.

This is not a satire on war. This is rather a tribute to those soldiers who came out of the horrors of warzone with their sanity and sense of humour intact. First rate performance under the guidance of Robert Altman makes this film a treat to watch.
