BARTON FINK 1991
by
Joel and Ethan Coen
John Turturro plays a hotshot playwright in New York. He makes a switch to Hollywood for a handsome salary but does not seem to make much progress. He wants to write transformative stuff for common people but is stuck. He puts up in an old, dilapidated hotel, where Steve Buscemi sits on the front desk. Over a period of time, he strikes a friendship with John Goodman. Fink meets with successful scriptwriters and has a fling with one's girlfriend who dies in his bed. A lot seems to happen in Fink's head. Events inside and outside fuse together to form a combustible mix.
The film is a masterclass of the unexplained. Many tropes are utilized by Coens to tell their story. Goodman is just so good, man! Michael Learner, who plays the Studio owner who hires Barton Fink, won an Oscar nomination as the Best Supporting Actor. I rate the film quite high for how it leaves you spellbound.
