The film is set in 1967. Michael Stuhlbarg plays a Jewish Professor of Physics based in St.Louis Park, Minnesota. His wife signals her desire to divorce him. His brother is a sodom and a degenerate gambler. His son smokes pot and owes money to a dealer. His daughter washes her hair all the time. A Korean student attempts to bribe him for better grades. The father of the student threatens to sue him for defamation or corruption. The college committee decides to review his tenue. The professor is besieged with trouble on all sides. He gravitates towards faith but finds no solace. Some problems get resolved on their own, more pile up. His son's bar mitzwah goes well. His tenure gets extended. His wife's paramour dies in an accident. Doctor calls him up to talk about test results. A tornado can be seen heading towards the college. Situations always resolve themselves for worse. This is a lovely message to give. I quite love this film. Thanks, Coens.
