ITS A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD 1963
by
Stanley Kramer
The man who directed Inherit the Wind and Judgement at Nuremberg directed a frivolous comedy about a group of colourful character rushing in a mad scramble to find a hidden loot at a designated spot. Spencer Tracy plays a coop who waits for them to find the spot for him so that he can flee with the purse. Hulchals, Hungamas, Golmals, Dhols, Dhamakas and God knows how many light-hearted comedies took these ideas in totality or partially and turned them into entertaining flicks.
Shot in air, amid out-of-control aircrafts, zooming and clashing cars, breaking sets, this one is one hell of an irreverent disaster comedy. It is elaborately shot which enhances the charm. People have no essential goodness in them, after all they are true Americans. The film works like a classic does, it leaves you in its spell.
