Shahid Kapoor, that chocolate boy from Cola ads, Ishq-Vishq and Vivah has gradually evolved into a damn good badass shitkicker. His transition began with Kaminey and continued with Haider, Udta Punjab and Kabir Singh. Here is an actor who can play characters with mixed shades with panache. He is stellar in Deva as well.
Deva is a nice standalone film, but when compared with the original Mumbai Police (Malayalam, 2013) it is a patchwork of compromises. Pooja Hegde is a sweet little girl with zero oomph. Rest of the cast including Pavail Gulati are just ordinary, which should not have been the case. The basic plot is damn good and it retains the suspense till the very end, but it is a case of one stud versus the rest of the world.
I would still recommend Deva because there is damn good action and suspense, cops and chases, murders and investigation, which is better than simplistic woke crap generally served on Netflix. But as a remake appearing after a decade, Deva should have left a deeper impact.
