Parental violence and childhood abuse can leave kids afflicted for life. This damage, if bottled up, sometimes erupts like a volcano and causes immense destruction. Nick Nolte (nominated Best Actor) plays a small –time policeman awaiting divorce, facing breakdown of relations with his daughter and battling his past with his abusive father, James Coburn (Winner, BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR OSCAR). Lonely, tired and edgy, Nick descends into an abyss of chaos as he gets obsessed with a murder case. As his life spirals out of control, Nick leaves behind a trail of crime. Beautifully shot and leisurely directed, AfflicTION captures the psychological import of Russell Banks’ novel perfectly. Sissy Spacek and Willem Dafoe also feature in the film.
