LUCKY BHASKHAR 2024
by
Venky Atluri
This film is based in the era of Big Bull Harshad Mehta.
A simpleton, working as a lowly employee in a private bank, lives a lower middle class life with his beautiful wife, six year old kid, paralysed father, and college-going brother and sister. He is humiliated by his in-laws, and at work, and even in his neighbourhood because he is forced to borrow money from people around him. Meanwhile, he is passed over at the time of promotion in the bank.
One day, opportunity knocks on his door. He realizes that by stretching the rules and drawing upon his goodwill, he can make big money. Once you begin to mint money, it gets difficult to stop. After that there is no stopping Bhaskhar. Not only does he get promoted in the bank, he also manages to dip his beak into Harshad's pool. But the lesson to be drawn from the film is - Anyone can be talented or get lucky, but one should know when to cry halt or pull out out of the gravy train.
As the film builds up, it is high adrenaline. But as he folds the whole story into conclusion, Atluri provides a masterclass in writing the climax. It helps that the film is fictional, because life does not allow you to sew perfectly.
Dulquer Salman is amazing as Lucky Bhaskhar. There is no other way to describe his performance. This is the biggest role he has played. The more I see him, and I see his films a lot, Salman manages to surprise me. Mammootty must be the proudest dad in Kerala. Meenakshi Choudhary does not disappoint. Supporting cast is well chosen. You cannot go much wrong if you draft in Tinu Anand and Sachin Khedkar. Lucky Bhaskhar is a very watchable family film, as well as a damn good crime thriller.
