First of all, Manoj Bajpayee has physically declined a lot. He almost looks hollowed out now. This is not a good sign, nor does it look onscreen.
Secondly, the film has some pretty bold scenes in the first half and hence please take care so that you are not taken off-guard. Manoj and the girls, Shahana Goswami and Arrchita Agrawal have gone hammer and tongs at each other. There is a lot of tongue-show, most of it quite animalesque.
On to the main story of the tragic murder of J.Dey of Mumbai Mirror, the plot is quite convoluted and characters much too deeply masked to make much heads or tails of it. I wish the script had been more lucid. Manoj has given his best, and at times, his intensity is quite disturbing, but the real story fails to emerge out of the confusion.
The murder of J.Dey has shocked the whole country. Hansal Mehta's webseries Scoop had focussed on Jigna Vora's side of the story. She was arrested for being complicit in Dey's murder. It was alleged that he had shared Dey's apartment address and bike number details with Rajan's men. Chhota Rajan, along with 8 others, was eventually convicted for his murder. But all that seems like a smokescreen thrown over the real scandal. There are shell companies, takeover of media, 2G and what not in this whole game, but Despatch is not able to tell the whole story.
