This is a film that deserves appreciation solely for one reason and that is the acceptance of the fact that almost everyone has certain psychological issues and some, or many such people might be in need of help, but would not acknowledge it. In a society where visiting a shrink, or a psychiatrist is still frowned upon and considered an admission of one’s madness, casting India’s most bankable star as someone desperately in need of help is indeed audacious and laud-worthy. That said, there is nothing in the film to bind the audience for 2h27m.
Alia Bhat and SRK, and most of the top brass of Bollywood have formed a mutual admiration society and it shows as they sleepwalk through their roles ,without making any effort per se, and yet get rave reviews just for showing up. Surely some dimwits might have gleaned vital information and inspiration from the film, but then it is such people who are carrying the burden of Bollywood on their shoulders. It is a democracy of losers and a consumer market of morons, so go enjoy Dear Zindagi, but know that even this cinema could have been made so much better.
