This is the great Dhanush's second directorial venture, first being Pa Pandi.
While Pa Pandi was a happier venture, Raayan is full of violence, most of it overdone. Right from the first set-up, the film is all about Dhanush's masterful killer activity using a thin TMT Bar. He is left with his two brothers and a toddler of a sister in his village with his parents gone. He brings them to Chennai, sets up a life and begins to take care of his siblings by running a small eatery.
But his family is caught in the middle of a feud between two warring ganglords. To survive, Dhanush has to pick up his weapon. Prakash Raj, the local cop, watches from the sidelines and sometimes intervenes to get more of thugs killed. This is a bloodletting fest, one which die hard fans of Dhanush shall enjoy very much. But the film lacks emotional depth and character-detailing and hence fails to sore critically.
