Let us not get influenced by Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Christopher Nolan while judging the earlier Batman films. This trio had the benefit of a half of century of legend-building around Batman, and enjoyed the luxury of philosophizing about crime. That said, Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne and Batman does not inspire. He is reliable but fails to generate empathy. You do not want to be Batman, when Robin (Chris O'Donnell) is earning all the sympathy, and Two-Face Harvey Dent (Tommy Lee Jones) and the Riddler (Jim Carrey) get to wear nice costumes and inflict evil upon Gotham. Nicole Kidman is not quite in form either. Batman Forever works because of the legend, but is not a patch upon later works.
