Arakshan - Better than expected!

 ARAKSHAN 2011

by

Prakash Jha

After Rajniti, I had not expected anything from Jha. Then again, he began by casting Saif Ali Khan as a Dalit student-turned- teacher, and Prateik Babbar as a so-called upper class student and his rival in seeking attention of Deepika Padukone, who plays the daughter of the great Big B.

Amitabh holds this film together with his conviction. Here is a man who wanna improve the lot of his students and in fact, of all the countrymen. His principles come into contest with Manoj Bajpayee's, who is a coaching predator. It goes to Manoj's credit that he managed to stand up to Bachchan's persona, and that takes some doing. Between quota, affirmative action, coaching and commercialization of education, Jha serves a watchable flick, only because many actors have given their best shot to make it work.
