The film is based on Lorenzo Carcaterra's 1995 book. Authorities maintain that it bears no resemblance to actual events, but the author insists that the story is real, just the setting is changed.
The film is a gem from the 1990s and covers the theme of exploitation in Correction Homes and subsequent revenge. The coming-of-age story segues into a legal drama and climaxes wonderfully.
Robert de Niro as a priest puts in a wonderful performance. Brad Pitt plays a young attorney who throws away a case to satisfies his thirst for revenge. Kevin Bacon is at his ruthless best. Dustin Hoffman plays a drunk lawyer who somehow gets his act together and manages a good verdict. Hell's Kitchen comes alive in the film.
With lovely, understated performances, the film just comes alive, and kicks one in the gut. Life is tough, but revenge is sweet.
