The DIG - The Excavation of Sutton Hoo

The DIG 2021

by

Simon Stone

In 1939, a Suffolk landlady hired a local self-taught excavator to explore burial mounds on her property at Sutton Hoo. The excavator, Basil Brown, managed to unearth Anglo-Saxon treasures of immense archaeological value. The landlady helped Brown to carry on his work by putting outsiders in their place.

The excavator is denied his due after the discoveries were made known. It is only recently that he has been prominently acknowledged. The film is based on John Preston's novel by the same name.

Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan have done very well. The Dig should be watched for the love of British countryside and amateur archaeology
