Kanchana Sita (Malayalam) - Aravindan's Retelling of Ramayana

 KANCHANA SITA 1977

by

G. Aravindan

Sita is Prakriti, and Ram is Purush. The film is based on this Samkhya duality.

The film is based on CN Srikantan Nair's play of the same name. The story of Ram-Sita has been retold by G. Aravindan beautifully. Sita is represented by natural elements.

The film has sparse dialogues, and is quite beautifully shot by Shaji N. Karun. The subplot of Shambuka also looms large over the plot. There was some controversy over Aravindan's decision to cast tribals as Ram, Laxman and Valmiki.

The film is quite poetic in expression, esp. how Sita , as Prakriti intervenes between Ram and Bharata, and Laxman and Luv-Kush. She expresses her joy when Ram meets his sons, and is represented as fire in a hut. In the end, Ram walks to his end in a river, holding fire in his hand, which signifies the ultimate union of Purush and Prakriti.

G Aravindan won the Best Director National Film Award for this film.
