Prasenjit moves around Bengal with a projector and some poorly-made educational films, along with his driver, Rajesh Sharma.
A very pregnant Rimi Sen, widowed in Gujarat and headed towards Bangladesh, takes lift from them and becomes a part of the adventure. Their projector is stolen, then they are taken prisoners by Naxals. who flee away with their government vehicle.
The trio cross into Bangladesh amid firing, in which Sharma is killed, and Prasenjit and Rimi are separated. Prasenjit follows a girl who looked like the heroine in one of her show-reels,and goes deep into Bangladesh.
Buddhadeb won the National Award for the Best Director for this film, which revolves around the themes of loneliness, dreams, pain and wistfulness.
