A short story of Premchand is enough to explain the stigma of untouchability to anyone who does not get the picture. A Satyajit Ray short film ,which is devastatingly honest is enough to shock anyone into shame or rebellion.

Sadgati is a brutally honest and poignant film which shows how caste used to govern (still governs) social relations in rural India. While some people assumed divine airs, others became dehumanised. Mohan Agashe as an arrogant Pandit, his contemptuous wife, a very submissive Om Puri and subdued Smita Patil have lived the characters.

I have not seen any other film which has managed to reveal the truth of this country with such simplicity and in such devastating manner.
