Wedding planners must have happening lives.Bittu and Shruti
showed it to us. Now Arjun Mathur and Shobita Dhulipala take us into various
kinds of households and weddings , and expose the tussle between old and new,traditional
and modern in the New India.
The series packs into its narrative as many social issues
as possible – homosexuality , caste, eldery marriage, political wedlock, dowry,
taboo of pre marital sex,superstitions and what not. There is nothing earth-shattering,but
the series scores in its brilliant casting,as well as subtle handling of
subjects.
The strongest aspect of this series is how the love
triangle between the lead trio – Shobita
, her best friend Kalki Koechlin and Her husband Jim Sarbh unfolds,against the
backdrop of various marriages. Arjun Mathur is gay,and along with Vikrant
Massey ends up doing far more on screen than I had previously seen in any
Indian production.
Shobita Dhulipala is the star of the show. Besides being
smoking hot,she has also displayed remarkable acting skills. This series is a
liberal’s wet dream. But somehow Zoya Akthar,Alankrita Shrivatava and company
have managed to entertain and discuss various complicated issues without
getting preachy. And this sells.
