PAD MAN- Hail Arunachalam M.

There is a lot to recommend about Pad Man. It deals with the subject of menstruation in a very mature manner, and in the process breaks some taboos. Not long back, these issues were not discussed even in cities and educated households, forget about rural areas.  But this film, based on the life of Arunachalam M. of Tamil Nadu, deserves accolades for daring to go this far.

Twinkle Khanna wrote a short story on Arunachalam M. and his quest for producing low-cost sanitary pads and pad-making machines. It was then she and Akshay Kumar decided to produce the film as well.

Akshay Kumar can sleepwalk through such roles now. Radhika Apte, as his wife, acts suitably repelled by his antics. Sonam Kapoor overacts through her role. The rest of the cast try their best to come across as buffoons.

But the film works, despite an over-the-top climax, because the story is relevant, and sounds too interesting to miss. Where so many substandard films get produced every year, Pad Man can be welcomed as a progressive film.
